Starting on January 1st, 2026, Professor Mauro Magnani, Chief Scientific Officer at Diatheva, has been appointed President of the Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS), one of the most authoritative organizations in the European life sciences ecosystem. Founded in 1964, FEBS brings together more than 30,000 researchers from 39 national scientific societies, promoting excellence in biochemistry and molecular biology through international congresses, fellowships, advanced training programs, and prestigious scientific journals.
Sharing the announcement, Professor Magnani described the appointment as “a recognition not only on a personal level, but of the entire Italian contribution to biochemical research”. His words reflect a career deeply rooted in scientific rigor, institutional engagement, and a strong commitment to the international research community.
A career bridging science, leadership, and innovation
Professor Magnani’s presidency represents the continuation of a long-standing leadership path within the scientific world. He previously served as President of the Italian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (SIB), Vice President of FEBS in 2025, and President of the 48th FEBS Congress, hosted in Milan in 2024. These roles have consistently focused on strengthening scientific collaboration and reinforcing the strategic role of biochemistry within medicine, biotechnology, and sustainability.
“Biochemistry is the science that explains the mechanisms of life. It is at the foundation of medicine, biotechnology, nutrition, and sustainability,” Professor Magnani noted, highlighting why this discipline remains central to addressing future global challenges.
Professor Emeritus at the University of Urbino Carlo Bo, his scientific output includes over 600 publications, more than 27,000 citations, and 16 international patents. Alongside his academic work, he has consistently promoted translational research, founding two biotech companies — Diatheva and EryDel — with the aim of transforming scientific knowledge into concrete solutions in diagnostics and therapies for rare diseases.
Beyond research and entrepreneurship, Professor Magnani has represented Italy in several international forums on biosafety, biotechnology, and synthetic biology, contributing to strategic discussions shaping the future of life sciences in Europe.
Looking ahead to his new role, he expressed a strong sense of responsibility and collaboration: “I am enthusiastic about working together to further strengthen European research in the life sciences”.
For Diatheva, this appointment is deeply meaningful. Professor Magnani’s journey is closely intertwined with our own history, our values, and our way of understanding science as a tool for real, tangible impact.
Seeing his vision and leadership guiding FEBS is a source of genuine pride for all of us at Diatheva. It reinforces our shared belief that rigorous research, innovation, and responsibility toward patients and society must always go hand in hand.
From all of us at Diatheva, congratulations, Professor!
We couldn’t be prouder.
